How to Use a Ringtone Website
Ringtone websites let you download audio files directly from their site. In most cases, the audio files are already prepared as ringtone files for you so that all you have to do is put the ringtone on your phone to use it.
However, not all phones make the transfer process easy. In fact, only Android devices, like phones from Samsung, Google, etc., can download ringtones directly to the device.
For iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, you have to first download the ringtone to your computer and then transfer it from your computer to your phone. You can do that with iTunes.
To download ringtones to an Android or BlackBerry device, pick the MP3 option on the ringtone website. If you're going to use the ringtone on an iOS device, download the M4R version of the ringtone.
If the ringtone website provides a ringtone in an audio format that your phone doesn't recognize as a ringtone file, your phone might store it as a song instead of a ringtone. You can use a free audio converter program like FileZigZag to save the ringtone in a format usable on your phone.
Some of these audio file downloads will start playing in your browser automatically and won't prompt you to download the ringtone to your computer. If that happens, right-click the file and choose to save it so that you can pick where it should download to on your computer.
How to Change Your Ringtone
Downloading free ringtones is just one step; to actually use the ringtones on your phone, you have to change your ringtone settings so that your device knows which audio file to use as the ringtone.
You can change your Android ringtone or pick a different iPhone ringtone from the Ringtone area of your phone's settings.
Not every ringtone website is legal, and even the legal ones sometimes have copyrighted music. If you see a ringtone from a modern, popular song, it's more than likely copyrighted and illegal to download.

- Every ringtone can be previewed before the download
- Thousands of options.
What We Don't Like
- Includes only a few ringtone categories
- Ringtones download as MP3s only
- The 'send to phone' feature doesn't work
Phonezoo is another free ringtone website that lets you download and share ringtones for your mobile devices. Some of the ringtones you can download are in the MP3 format while others may be saved as M4A files.
The website isn't laid out very nicely, so it's not as easy or fun to browse through like most of the services from above, but it does offer free ringtone downloads without any strings attached.
All of the ringtones can be previewed before you download or share them.
This Phonezoo.com URL used to belong to a different ringtone website that has since been shut down. What you see here is a website with the same name and similar function (ringtone downloads), but it's not the same website it used to be.
Myxer used to be one of the best ways of getting free ringtones for your phone. Unfortunately the company behind Myxer filed for bankruptcy back in 2014 and hasn’t been heard from since. So where are the best places to get free ringtones now Myxer is gone?
You have two main options when looking for ringtones. You can download a ready-made tone or you can create your own with an app. I tend to create an MP3 tone on my computer and copy it to my phone. I can manipulate the file as I see fit and then save it as a ringtone. Some of you might prefer to do it all on your phone so I will cover that too.
Websites to download free ringtones
Quick Links
- Websites to download free ringtones
- Apps to create your own ringtones
There are a few good websites around that still offer free ringtones for phones. There are nowhere near as many as there used to be but the ones that survive are still here for a reason. They deliver the goods.
Zedge
Zedge is probably the best known of all the remaining ringtone websites. It offers thousands of them along with apps, wallpapers, games and apps. Ringtones range from recent tracks, chart singles to random quotes or movie excerpts. With so many to choose from and a quick preview option on the site, choosing a good one is easy. It works with both Android and iPhone. Moffatt bible translation free online.
Mobile9
Mobile9 is another survivor that delivers good quality ringtones, wallpapers, themes and more. It uses an app instead of a website browser but that makes loading the ringtone onto your phone easier. Browsing is very straightforward and installing the media is just a matter of selecting and enabling it. Mobile9 works with both Android and iPhone.
Myxer Free Ringtones For Android
Free Ringtones
I love a self-descriptive name and Free Ringtones is a perfect example. It is a website from where you can download ringtones, wallpapers and all sorts. It doesn’t quite have the range of Zedge but the preview function makes selecting a good tone simple and effective. As the tones are free, there isn’t a lot to complain about. Free Ringtones works with both Android and iPhone.
My Tiny Phone
My Tiny Phone is pretty good if you’re after goofy ringtones rather than the latest tracks. It has hundreds of ringtones but few chart tracks or new movie themes. It’s real strength is in wallpaper but the sheer number of ringtones available and the online preview option makes it a site well worth checking out. My Tiny Phone works with both Android and iPhone.
Apps to create your own ringtones
Myxer Free Ringtones Mp3 Mobile Phone
If you would prefer to create your own tone, there are a range of apps and programs that allow you to do just that. You can take sounds from any type of file, isolate it and create an MP3 from it. This can be then used as a ring tone.
Audacity
Audacity is a free, open source audio program for Windows, Mac and Linux. I use this program to create my own ringtones. You load up the source, isolate the audio component, save it as an MP3 and can then manipulate it as you see fit. It is still developed and updated and works very well.
MP3 Cutter and Ringtone Maker
MP3 Cutter and Ringtone Maker is an Android app that allows you to create MP3 ringtones from an audio source. It works similarly to Audacity but in a mobile format. The UI is very straightforward and the creation process is fast and easy. I tried this out while writing this piece and it seemed easy to use an existing audio file, chop and edit it and save it as a new tone. Can’t ask more than that really.
My Myxer Ringtone Site
Ringtone Designer
My Myxer Free Ringtones
Ringtone Designer is an iPhone app that does much the same thing as MP3 Cutter and Ringtone Maker. There is a maximum play length of 30 seconds per file but other than that, is simple and straightforward to use. The free version is ad supported while the premium version removes those ads. You also need to sync the app with iTunes.
Each of these three apps makes creating an MP3 file very straightforward. You can then go to your phone, set notification sound and point to the file you just created. You have to load the file from Audacity but the two apps save the file on your phone anyway so should be easy to find and set up. As you can set a different ringtone per contact, there is a lot of scope for experimentation here.
